Hello all,
This newbie is having pretty good beginners luck to date with four
respectable pumpkins all over 400 lbs. to date. I really would like to get
up to 500 for my first effort but they are really slowing down as of late.
Anyway here's a question for the experts... One of the above is getting a
little soft around the stem base. I have applied a captan sulfur paste but
it seems to be getting slowly worse. I almost harvested today here in
central N.Y. but couldn't bring myself to do it as it is still growing and
Indian Summer seems to have arrived. Should I get this fruit off the vine
while it's still salvageable or let it go a bit longer? Will it last 'till
Oct. 4?..31?? Anything else I can do? The vine itself also seems to be
dying back if that's any help in making the decision.
Another querie... I seem to be finding a great difference in estimating
weight using the two methods. Assuming they are both supposed to be
reliable why don't they come closer together. Is the OTT method more
accurate? I hope so because that's the only way these pumpkins come out to
be as big as I think they are.
Ciao, John
