stem split

My 200 pound pumpkin has developed a split over the last 4 days that has
increased steadily as the pumpkin continues to grow. The split is almost an
inch wide at the junction of the stem and the pumpkin itself. Should I
harvest it or let it continue to grow. If I leave it to grow more, is there
something I should do to the split area to protect it from disease or
insects? 

P.S. Thanks to all who have posted this year. This mailing list has  been
tremendously helpful to me as it is my first time growing AG's
