Hi Sean and other Alberta growers.
Congratulations on your 1st place finish at this year's Sedgewick Pumpkin
Weigh-off.
We didn't get the snow here in Edmonton, but it froze last night. Since my
patch isn't set up very well to cover it, I turned on the sprinkler
overnight. About 30% of the leaves froze, mostly where the sprinkler
didn't reach.
If you get a chance, you should check out the GPC weigh-off in Smokey Lake,
Alberta on Oct.4/97. It's the best place in Western Canada to get a close
look at some of the big ones, and meet other growers. Maybe, I'll see you
there!
I'm hoping to meet Bill Kournikakis from Medicine Hat as well.
To Bill,
From your measurements, it sounds like you're a bit ahead of me, but not by
much! On Sept. 10, my two contenders had OVT measurements of:
95.0 circ., 64.5 ss, 62.5 sb, = 222 in. total
90.8 , 52.0 , 55.0 , = 197.8
That was nine days ago and I believe they have kept growing slowly, but
last night's frost may have put a stop to any more growth. Now, I wonder
if all that water from 9 hours of sprinkling will make them split.
It has been cool and damp, so I haven't mucked around in the patch very
much. I'm anxious to measure them tomorrow.
Like you, my pumpkins are on track to just surpass my personal best. Only
difference is, you are about 100 lbs ahead of me! You may remember that my
best prospect split about a month ago. THAT one might have given you a run
for your money.
I hope we run into each other at Smokey Lake.

I woke up this morning to a white lawn! YUCK! It has melted and the
weather is supposed to be nice for next week. That will be enough time
to haul in many truckloads of manure and get ready for next year. Thanks
to all who sent me congratulations on my first pumpkin harvest. It means
a lot to me and gives me encouragement for next year.
