RE: "vacation"

Jan,
Absolutely take it to the weigh off. I can assure you it won't be the
smallest one there. (It may be mine.) The weigh offs are great to attend
even if you don't have one to enter, but by entering yours you get that
little bit of extra thrill from being a participant. I'll be there with
mine even though I haven't made a huge improvement over last year, it's
still an improvement. Last year I was fourth from last at Remlinger
farms and last place at the Supermall weigh off in Auburn. No matter
what I end up with this year I'll bring something to each of them.
Besides you'll never know what your pumpkin really weighs unless you put
it on that scale. Those measurements are only an estimate, you may find
you have a much heavier fruit than what you thought you had as I did
last year. It also gives you a chance to meet the other growers and do
a little networking for next years seeds and pick up growing tips.
Those Heavy Hitters might be a little more forthcoming with good
information if they see you are also participating but not yet in a
position to challenge them for heaviest pumpkin. I think they really
want to see others succeed and challenge them. There were no big ego's
on display at the weigh off's just big pumpkins and squash. Although
you have to recognize that the folks that are there with the biggest
pumpkins are generally also involved with organizing and running the
weigh off and have a lot of different people making demands on their
time out there. The weigh off at Auburn was a much more relaxed affair.
There is a category for smallest pumpkins as well as ugliest but I'm not
sure how those are awarded or judged. I hope all goes well with your
surgery and you will be off the crutches by October. Keep me posted and
let me know if you need a hand when it comes time to move it.
