<< wasn't moving with the times.......so my buddy
and i decided to introduce a real weigh- off........then

we had the opposite kind of thing happen at "our" contest at the
 fair......we had two catagories....junior and adult.....we offered $$100
for the adult division and $$75 for the junior......well the adults weighed
111 and the junior 321.....something just didn't seem right....and the the
kid couldn't figure why he didn't take top money..and he was right
.......so now we do cash prizes to 15th place heavy takes it....age mean
nothing until we see the need.......sounds like you in the position to
educate the fair of the new trend....of
 AG..................congrats......MB

pumpkins,
Brian Kitney and I run a 3,000 dollar pumpkin contest for New Milford
Farms ( a subsidiary of Nestles) in association with the New Milford Womens
Club. What we do is have an adult category and a childrens category. The
adults get roughly 2,500 and the kids get 500bucks. The children are allowed
to compete with the adults for the higher prize money........once a child has
entered the adult ranks, they must compete against the adults in all future
contests. Kind of like an amateur turning pro. Once you have the ability to
compete with the big boys and girls...you must stay there. They are not shut
out of the big prize money. They can't go back next year and dominate the
little kids the following year. Seems to work out fine. We are also lowering
the top prize in the adults and spreading the loot around more. Next year at
Topsfield, we will be having a vote of the membership to lower the top prize
and spreading the wealth around more. I would like to see 2,000 top prize
instead of 3,500 and fatten up the top 20 places. I would also like to see a
500 dollar prize for 50th place. Topsfield has roughly 100 entries....imagine
coming in with a 350 pounder and walking away with 500 bucks....how cool!!! It
gives everyone hope, excitement....... imagine watching the leader board as
the weighoff progresses, watching 50th position change.....high
tension.......It will also encourage more people to show up. Some people don't
show up for the heavy hitters wipe them out year after year.
