1. Marv, you may not have to eat quite as much crow as you first
thought. Zoo's largest pumpkin went down. He says some creature ate a
hole into it and it had about 6 inches of pumpkin swill inside. It's
gone. He has another that is kind of big - he hopes it will hold on
till weigh-off.
2. Zoo may still be able to crow, if only vicariously. There's a
father-son team down here in Fairfax (first-timers) growing a Mighty
Mabel seed. I went to see this plant on Monday, and - let me measure my
words - this is not the most impressive-looking plant you've ever seen.
(!) But, lo and behold, it's packing a 550-pound pumpkin. If
all goes well, and if there are no surprises around the state, these
guys may set a new Virginia record. And here's the kicker: I asked
Dave if he started out with a plan of action or if he had any secrets
and he said innocently, (I swear I'm not making this up), "Anytime I had
a question, I called Joe, and I did whatever he told me." I tried to
maintain my composure. Joe's head swelled visibly and immediately.
Marv, I think you will see these guys in Altoona.
3. I had a nice long talk with Barbara Kincaid this weekend. Asked me
to let everyone know she hasn't turned snooty on us - to the contrary,
she misses us terribly. The com port on her laptop died, the nearest
fixit place is 50 miles away, and they don't stock the part, so it had
to be ordered. We might not hear a lot from her for another couple of
weeks. She wants everyone to know she has enjoyed all her pumpkin
visits and will be in touch with all y'all as soon as possible.
Beth
