Doc Pumpkinstein once told me he didn't hand pollinate, but left the job
completely to the bees.
What about other established practices? Has anyone out there produced a
700 lb pumpkin without burying vines? Without pruning? Without
roto-tilling even once? How about without adding *any* fertilizer during
the growing se >>
I don't believe Don Blacks 884 World Record Holder was pruned or buried. It
was on a side vine about 4 feet from the base of the plant. There are a wide
variety of growing techniques that will yield results if your soil is in good
condition and you have the lucky seed and good conditions.Monsters have been
grown on 6.0 pH and 7.5 pH. Heavy soil & sandy soil, foliar & no foliar,
pruned and unpruned, 6 feet from the base and 25 feet from the base, side vine
& main vine, small leaves & big leaves, White seeds and brown seeds, hand and
bee pollinated, high and medium fertilizer levels. I always believed it took
90% hard work and 10% luck. Now I think it is 50% location and environmental
conditions, 25% hard work and 25% luck.
