I have seen this happen for two years now. One of the plant's responses to
stress is to throw out one last burst of flowers. I suspect this is an
attempt to reproduce as a result of stress. I do not apply fertilizer late
in the season. Incidently, I have observed this with Bonsai trees as they
are dying. It seems likely that this burst of growth is stimulated by the
autumn conditions. Tim
