Pumpkineers,
I was hanging over the Dark Horse tonite, and a neighbor asked if I
really wanted to cut it open, which I replied, sure, what the heck, lets
do it tonite. The rest , will amaze you....
After cutting it into 10 pieces, (rot throughout the squash), I weighed
the individual pieces ona very reliable set of digital scales, and the
weight came out to 879 pounds!! The cantelouping is one thing, but the
walls of the squash from the stem and shoulders down to almost mid
pumpkin were 12-13 inches thick. It was getting too dark to take digital
photos, or a camcorder to film the cutting, so I used my regular camera,
and have plenty of shots of the wall thickness(with the measuring tape
showing the width), different rotting sections, and the actual small
split onthe bottom.
The split that occurred, was directly on the bottom, and was at the
very top of the concave bottom, so that is why when I dug underneath it
the other day, I didnt get covered with pumpkin sludge. While there were
plenty of spots that had bad rot, I think I can save about 100 seeds or
so for future seedings.
Just thought you would like the last update, as the Dark Horse suprised
me and weighed 119 pounds over its estimate weight from the chart.
