Tim,
Mine is pretty pear shaped also. Actually, it's extremely wide in
the middle. It's skin is very wide deeply ribbed, light orange in
color, and tons (and i mean tons) of cantelouping(where the shoulders
are it literrally looks, and feels like a canteloupe). I measured it
out last night to be over 650 lbs. i pollinated it july 12, about 15 ft
on the main vine. i didn't run into the same problems you did with it
only wanting to grow plant. i'm glad to hear however that you were
right on the money with the charts, even though i wish you were over!!
I'm hoping that its thick walled. i have another pumpkin on a different
plant, and when i tap on it, it sounds hollow, however the 715, when i
tap in it , it definitaly does not sound hollow! i hope that means
thick walls, but i guess the only way i'm really going to find out is at
the scale. im having a slight problem with a little rot on my stem. i
scraped it, and then applied a fungicide powder, but the stem wasn't
dry, and the powder did the exact opposite of what i wanted it to do.
so last night, i scraped off the fungicide, and broke out the hairdryer.
worked pretty good too. this morning it was a little moist, but not
like it was before. tonight i'm going to purchase a portable fan, and
set it up to blow on it till it's completely dry. only 16 days to go,
i'm not losing this now! it's still growing, but very slowly, 4 pounds
yesterday, i guess i have to wait and see what happens. Definately let
me know what your weights for this year are! Where are you
(geographically), i'm on long island, so i'll be going to the long
island GPC weighoff in amaggansett. Where is the big E weighoff? i
keep hearing about it. As a side note, i self pollinated mine this
year, the plan, if it turns out to be more than the estimated weight, is
to cross it onto something else, preferribly something over it's
estimated weight. keep it growin' till oct 3!!!!
scott
Scott, I had replied to you but since it was my first attempt, the
message
may have been lost in the ozone. Yes, I planted a Dills 715 last year.
It
was a plant that wanted to be a plant for a long time before it would
flower. I set a pumpkin on it in early August. By Labor day it had an
estimated weight of 125#. However, by early October, it weighed 598#.
It
was harvested around 10/5. This pumpkin was rather orange with wide
deep
ribs. It was roughly pear-shaped. It was right on the money for real
weight vs estimated weight while my other fruits on a different plant
each
weighed about 10% light. I felt that this plant preferred the cooler
weather, and it obviously came on strong late. The plant had the
largest
leaves that I have ever seen. I crossed this plant with a JC 697 to try
to
get big leaves and better heat tolerance. I planted a seed from this
cross
and have 2 on the hook. Est weights are 300 and 400 pounds. I'll let
you
know how they weigh if you'ld like. Will you be at the Big E? Tim
