That's what he gets for starting so early. In the midwest, pumpkins should be 
started no earlier than June 1. That is my opinion, anyway. Otherwise you are 
going to end up with pumpkins in early September, and who wants that?!
Anyway, usually pumpkins will store well (I've had some before keep for about 
6-7 months), in a cool dark, area with controlled humidity. The only thing I 
know to do is to spray with sulfer or other fungicide (maybe some Captan on 
the soft spots, and try to get the pumpkin as close to refrigerated condition 
(40-60 F) as possible.
