GPC RULES for1998
1. The pumpkin must have been grown by and cared for by the exhibitor.
2. An exhibitor may enter only one specimen per class and there may be no more than two entries per family (household).
3. Each family (house hold) will be eligible for only one GPC cash award per class per year. Second entries will be allowed and recognized but will not be eligible for the over-all GPC prize awards.
4. A Specimen must be entered and weighed at one of the official Great Pumpkin Commonwealth sites.
5. Each site will have two active agricultural agents and/or government representatives to assist as judges, inspect entries, and supervise weighing .Two Master Gardeners will be acceptable in lieu of agricultural agents.
6. Color requirements ** To be eligible for the heaviest pumpkin, the entry must be a minimum of 75% white to cream-yellow to orange in color. All others will be considered squash. Common sense and good judgment is required here since there is no precise way to determine the above. A majority decision of the judges is required and is final.
7. The specimen must be sound, healthy and undamaged. Entries must be free of rot, chemical residue (fungicides), holes/cracks through to the cavity and serious soft spots. Once again, this is a subjective matter for the judges to decide. We included the term "serious" before soft spots, because some pumpkins will exhibit minor soft spots which in no way compromises the soundness of the pumpkin.
8. No foreign material is permitted to be included in the weighing. The vine must be trimmed to one inch from the stem of the fruit. The judges reserve the right to fully inspect each specimen before the weight is announced and official. Refusal to allow the inspection of and entry will cause said entry to be deemed "exhibition only".
9. Any specimen previously entered or weighed at any other National or International competition prior to the GPC contest is not eligible for competition.
10. In the event of a tie, the prize money for those two placing will be combined and split equally
11. The three heaviest pumpkins at each site must ultimately be weighed without the use of tarps or other carrying devices.
