Subject: weighoff requirements

Can anyone tell me where I might find a site that has the official rules
for weighoffs run by the GPC? I talked to the coordinator of the weighoff
in Neekoosa, WI and was given very vague rules of no holes, soft spots, or
splits.
I currently have one in the patch at 370#'s (estimated) that I have been
trying to keep from rotting on the stem. Today I noticed that the area
around the stem looks like it is starting to crack. It does not appear to
go into the pumpkin cavity, but would this be enough to disqualify me from
a weigh off?
One last question. Is stem rot an inherent trait in some pumpkins? This
is my second pumpkin over 300# on a 739 Welty that has had rotting on the
stem. Just curious if it's the pumpkin or something that I am doing wrong.

i think it would be great if everybody, when talking about a pumpkin that
was weighed would add somewhere in the body what seed it was grown from. I
know most of you do this, and that's great, but not everybody does. I
think it would really be beneficial to everybody as far as family trees are
concerned, and avoid alot of the questions of "what seed did you grow".

Subject: GPC RULES for1998

1.	The pumpkin must have been grown by and cared for by the exhibitor.
2.	An exhibitor may enter only one specimen per class and there may be
no more than two entries per family (household).
3.	Each family (house hold) will be eligible for only one GPC cash
award per class per year. Second entries will be allowed and recognized but
will not be eligible for the over-all GPC prize awards.
4.	A Specimen must be entered and weighed at one of the official Great
Pumpkin Commonwealth sites.
5.	Each site will have two active agricultural agents and/or government
representatives to assist as judges, inspect entries, and supervise weighing
.Two Master Gardeners will be acceptable in lieu of agricultural agents.
6.	Color requirements ** To be eligible for the heaviest pumpkin, the
entry must be a minimum of 75% white to cream-yellow to orange in color. All
others will be considered squash. Common sense and good judgment is required
here since there is no precise way to determine the above. A majority
decision of the judges is required and is final.
7.	The specimen must be sound, healthy and undamaged. Entries must be
free of rot, chemical residue (fungicides), holes/cracks through to the
cavity and serious soft spots. Once again, this is a subjective matter for
the judges to decide. We included the term "serious" before soft spots,
because some pumpkins will exhibit minor soft spots which in no way
compromises the soundness of the pumpkin.
8.	No foreign material is permitted to be included in the weighing. The
vine must be trimmed to one inch from the stem of the fruit. The judges
reserve the right to fully inspect each specimen before the weight is
announced and official. Refusal to allow the inspection of and entry will
cause said entry to be deemed "exhibition only".
9.	Any specimen previously entered or weighed at any other National or
International competition prior to the GPC contest is not eligible for
competition.
10.	In the event of a tie, the prize money for those two placing will be
combined and split equally
11.	The three heaviest pumpkins at each site must ultimately be weighed
without the use of tarps or other carrying devices.

Well my best chance of passing the 500 lb. mark this year bit the dust
sometime in the past 40 hours. I went to my patch this morning and Deembo
had developed a blossom end split. It was the largest one in the patch and
was growing the fastest at this point. It measured out at 127-75-73 for
275" and 429lbs........
This has really put a dark cloud into an otherwise sunny day.........My next
best bet is on the 916 LaRue but growing at a slower pace........It may not
make 500............Now I'll have to decide which weigh-off to take the
smaller pumpkin to.......The next largest one in the patch is on the 769
Mettler plant..........Approximately 300 lbs. right now..........My daughter
is really going to be disappointed when I tell her this.... It was her
pumpkin because she had named it..........It was no "Whomper" but it was the
best one I had going.......I just hope I can keep the other ones together.
A tough year just got tougher......

Jim:
Why not add the rule, the pumpkin, can be opened, on site, if anyone
thinks there is hanky panky going on, as in drag racing, you put up cost of
putting engine back together & they take it apart. (Not your choice !) If it
is found cheating, you get your money back & they go home with their tail
between their leg's, never to show again. All people are not honest although
we like to think they are. I don't suppose pumpkin people are any different,
since finding out that some people are selling seed at $10 US ea. I'am
disappointed. What happened to PVP laws.
Some of us new growers do not know what size split or crack is
acceptable
at a weighoff. The veterans do, that leaves us at a great disadvantage if
they will
not open the pumpkin on site to determent if split or crack goes into
cavity.
        That's the view from here.

Bill,
For one thing, you can't put a pumpkin back together again.

NO, I just went to smooth out the fungicide paste around the crack and I =

but it's a big loss for me! I'm going for a cold one. Don
