Re: Shrub/Tree seedlings...

I will second and third the others who've said plant them outside in
a holding bed as soon as danger of frost in your area is passed and
you've hardened them off. The holding bed can be located in a
partially shaded site - morning sun preferable to noon or late
afternoon.

Prepare the bed as though you were planning on growing vegetables -
that is, deeply and thoroughly. Line out your seedlings and make
sure they are watered so that they do not dry out.

I would expect the rose to bloom for you in a couple three years -
they are fairly fast from seed - at least some of the species are,
don't know yours. Don't know about the others, tho' I have a bird
sown Mahonia bealei that I dug from our woods at about 15" tall who
bloomed the second year after I moved it to my borders. Expect it
was about 3 years old when I moved it. Each of your plants will have
a different growth pattern...some are going to grow and reach
blooming size faster than others.

BTW, Amsonia hubrectii is an herbaceous perennial...not a woody:-)

You will probably need to lift and re-set these as they grow, so that
they don't crowd each other and so that you can maintain compact root
balls for ease in final transplanting. The only danger with lining
shrubs and trees out in holding beds is letting them get too big to
move easily....been there; done that....easy to forget them in the
hysteria of general gardening.

Also agree about protecting these tiny children from critters with a
hardware cloth cage of some kind - at least for the first year or so
- makes it hard to weed and tend, but you can probably devise
something that you can remove easily and replace after you've done
the necessary for them. I'd also mulch them once the ground has
warmed up to help prevent weeds from overtaking them....that is a
real danger, as a lusty weed plant can smother a tiny woody plant
seedling in quick order.
