That is fresh sawdust that ties up Nitrogen. I expect that composted
sawdust is just fine in that regard, though I have not tried it
myself, I know a man who lives on a granite outcrop and layed down
thousands of cubic yards of sawdust about 25 years ago. He now has
wonderful topsoi and grows an overwhelming jungle of tropical and
subtropical palms in that medium.
