Dear Rob:
I don't know if I sow enough seeds for this discussion of Thompson &
Morgan but I'm at # 500 since January 1 that includes: herbaceous
perennials, shrubs, trees, alpines, bedding plants, vegetables,
greenhouse & tropical plants, hardy annuals. The seed comes from
various sources: seed exchanges, British & German seed companies, US
large nationwide, regional, specialty interest. I do keep germination
notes on my seedlings.
Year after year I order most of my seeds from Thompson & Morgan.
They're a fine old company that strives for excellence. When Norman C.
Deno published his first edition, the president of TM's US operations
spent considerable time with him.
You'll notice subtle changes in seed instructions year to year that
reflects results of current research. When you sow a species from
Thompson Morgan you can expect a better form and correctly labeled
seed.
I'm sure all of you sometimes order the same species from various
sources and then compare both the quality of the seed and the resultant
plants. You can't fault TM.
Even common annuals and veggies from TM grow well for me. Has anyone
seen a bloom yet on Antirrhinum 'Jamaican Mist'? I had a high
germination rate on this snapdragon. Geranium 'Splish Splash' had
100%. The pansy seed that didn't germinate quickly was placed in the
refrigerator for a chilling period and then the remainder germinated;
this isn't specialty seed knowledge just reading the back of the
package.
My hardy annuals, cool season veggies and some of the perennials are
hardened off and ready to go in the ground.
Let's get off knocking Thompson Morgan and start planting. This is
prime garden season!
Best, Vicki
