Dear Tina,

GA3 is an abbreviation for Gibberellic Acid-3, also referred to by its
generic term, gibberellin (there are other gibberellins, but GA3 is the
most commonly used in horticulture).  This compound is a plant hormone, or
growth regulator, and one of its (many) roles is to help in the dormancy
release of certain diffucult-to germinate seeds (provided, of course, they
are dormant to begin with!).

The potential uses of gibberellins have also been discussed in a recent
message thread on this list (I am particularly thinking of my post on April
