Hello,
I used to grow Hibiscus and was a member of the local chapter of the
American Hibiscus Society. Grafting is done because hybrids usually do
not have extensive root systems and some garden variety hibiscus have
better root systems. You graft the hybrid wood scion (a viable piece of
the hybrid stem or branch) to the plain jane with the superior root
system. This gives you a plant that has the beauty of the hibiscus
hybrid and the vigor of the plain jane plant roots. The idea is similar
to the grafting of patent roses or citrus trees. Any questions?

I hope this is clear.
