Plant divisions

>The best time to divide hostas (perrenials in general) is early spring,

I would expand on Chris' response here. Spring blooming perennials can to
be divided in the Fall, especially in warmer climates. The plants have time
to establish roots before any really cold weather hits, and are ready to
bloom in the Spring.

Fall blooming perennials can be divided in the Spring before it gets too
hot, and then be ready to put on a show at their proper time.

I believe the rule of thumb is to divide perennials in the opposite season
from their bloom time.
