Re: Hosta : plant divisions

According to Bob Solberg, about three weeks after the shoots have emerged.
Hosta roots from last year are suppling this springs energy, so if you cut
roots off too soon by dividing too early you are placing the plant in a very
stressful condition.

He claims that Hostas start sending out new roots about three weeks after they
emerge from the ground and this is the ideal time to divide. The next ideal
time to divide is when the plants are sending up another flush of growth.
About three weeks after a new flush of growth the plants will again be sending
out additional new roots.
However, many cultivars of hostas, especially anything in the sieboldiana
family, only have one flush of growth per year, so it helps to know what
family you are dealing with.
