Glider and others-

Actually heavenly bamboo is not a true Bamboo. One of the problems with
the common name. Nandias are actually woody shrubs in the Berberidaceae
(Barberry family). True bamboos are grasses. The foliage of Nandina has a
bamboo look to it and the stems have swellings on them that give the look
of nodes like on bamboo canes. They have small white flowers in spring
that are followed by clusters of red/orange berries. One of their finest
qualities is their firey red-maroon fall colors. There are many wonderful
cultivars to choose from. From what I have heard they can be a bit of a
challenge to root from cuttings. If you want to try take semi-ripe
cuttings in mid summer. They are a little on the slow side in the way of
growth.

Just thought that you might want to know :)

Marc

P.S. glider you were right about the true bamboos.
