I have recently sown seeds of this Convolvulaceae species in two batches of six seeds each, one at 70 , and one at 70 dark. After 3-4 days one seed in both batches had germinated. After another five days with no additional germination I scarified 3 of the remaining 5 seeds at 70. Two days later these three scarified seeds germinated. I then scarified all remaining seeds both at 70 and at 70 dark, and 2 days later all seeds had germinated.
It is clear that scarification of the seed coat speeds up germination considerably. Seeds swelled when fluids were permitted to pass through the seed coat and this swelling could be detected one day after scarification, while the not scarified seeds remained the same size they had upon sowing. It could very well be that the two seeds that germinated after 3-4 days at the initial stage, did so because there was an already present hole or crack in the seed coat Light or dark does not seem to affect germination.
Ipomoea species also germinate faster if seeds are scarified/punctured. Ipomoea coccinea germinated 100 % in 2 days when seed coats were scarified with a needle.
