My apologies to the list - I have managed to answer my own question.
I kept digging and have found a lovely book on my shelf 'Hardy Woody Plants
from Seed. It has answered my question quite satisfactorly.
Quote:
The fruit of the dogwood is a fleshy berry containing on large nutlet type,
stone which is nominally two seeded. The flesh is active in enhancing
dormancy of the seed as it ripens and it therefore imoprotant that fruits
should be collected as soon as they change colour and separated from the
flesh directly.
Hmmm.... I wonder why I didn't get any pits this year? Oh well at least I
now know what they 'should' look like.
Thanks for your time,
Dale
