The species can readily raised from seed, but the named cultivars should
be propagated vegetatively.  Most cultivars will produce seed and many
of the seedlings will breed true, but without rigorous testing and
selection, errors and confusion will occur, and should, for the purposes
of maintaining trueness to type, be avoided. 

Basal shoots should be taken as cuttings in autumn and overwitnered in a
cold frame.  Pot on in early spring and pinch out the growing tips to
encourage a bushy habit. Cuttings may also be taken in spring.
