I believe most apple and crabapple trees are propagated by grafting a bud
of the known variety onto a rootstock. Here on the Canadian prairies this
method results in a 5'-7' tree after two growing seasons depending on the
variety. The process is simple enough once you see it but it may be quite
tedious to explain via the printed word. I'm not an expert on budding (I
collect the budwood for our budding crews but don't actually do the budding
-- too slow to be economically feasible!!) but I am familiar with the
methods that we employ here and would be happy to provide details.
