There are D.innoxia ssp innoxia varieties that fit this description - do the
spikey pods hang down or point upwards and what colour/size/texture are the
seeds ?

Several Daturas' flowers have a pale Yellow tinge while opening - again, how
do the pods hang, and what are the seeds like ? (smaller black seeds + seed
pod points up = probably D.stramonium)
As Don says the habit and the hairyness are also useful indicators.

The most obvious difference between Brugmansia and Datura is that the
Brugmansias' flowers hang down.
