We have a horse chestnut in the back-yard (Aesculus hippocastanum) and I
found, quite by surprise, that after not finishing raking and carrying
off the chestnuts(ie. I left them piled up over the winter in situ),
many of them germinated in the spring. I could not believe it at first
because my Botany Prof of many years back tried everything to get some
started for one of our courses. Good luck!
