Last September I ran into an excellent example of a beautiful purple leaf
vine at a nursery that was explained to be a sweet potato vine. I was told
that it was an annual in Kansas and that the only way to buy it was from
seed (from them). I wonder if this is true [about starting from seed only],
and if It has tubers like many other Ipomoeas. Since I haven't run into a
shade loving Ipomoea before I wonder if this one too needs full sun and
persistent defense against aphids and Spider mites. Would it start indoor in
winter in a pot? I am especially interested in replies from the central
plains of the US, but all info is welcome.
I have been training my morning glories and cardinal flowers up my bamboo
for a few years and the effect is great, but they want more sun and more
aphid protection than I have time to do.
