Tim:
I used to garden in Kansas so know your conditions. We moved to southern
Missouri a few years back. I obtained the sweet potato vine, Blackie, last
year and had it planted in mostly shade. It does really well. In fact, it
grew from the pot about 3 feet down and started rooting along the soil. In
the fall when I was getting ready to bring them in, I pulled it up from the
ground and it had a large tuber that had grown there. I brought the tuber in
and also took cuttings from the plants. They root really fast and easy in
water. Someone suggested that taking them from the tuber was better or
easier to get them started but I had no problem with the transition from
water to soil. I usually plant my cuttings in a soilless mix and have had no
problems with either white flies or spider mites. I sometimes spray with
insecticidal soap and keep a close watch and, I also have lots of lady bugs
that take care of my aphid population.
Wishing you success. Jean Carpenter
