Well, now. I haven't heard of using a topping of sand or grit to prevent
damping off. That's usually used to deter fungus gnats. I use milled
sphagnum moss topping to deter damping off. IMHO, you can use all the
hygiene in the world, and you're not impervious to damping off. Margaret L
