I think pines have a high incidence of empty seed coats, but I'm not sure.
I know my own experience with looking for pine seeds (usually to eat them
*shrug* to each their own) was that they tend to be released from layers of
the cone as the cone opens. My bust luck capturing them as a child was to
pick a full sized, but totally green and resinous, cone, and place it in my
coat pocket until such a time as I later discovered it.
I have no idea if the seeds I found this way were at all viable. I seem to
have momentarily misplaced Deno's germination guides, so I can't relay what
he's published.
