Heat Tape was Regrigerator top

Here's an embarassing question:

While I'm waiting for the late started horse manure hot bed to
stabalize, I would like to start some seeds on my heat tape. Try as I
might, however, I cannot find the thermostat for the mat, only the
mat itself, which is happy to plug right into the wall.

While I'm meditation on where I left the short stemmed soil
thermomenter last season, can someone tell me if there is any
potential at all of using this mat without the thermostat? I'm
certainly open to using layers of insulation between it and and the
flats.

Of course, I don't want to burn out the mat or burn down the house!!

What say?

Thanks
