RE: Clematis viorna

I use RediEarth's germinating mix, which is light and fine and doesn't feel quite as fluffy as the Sunshine mix. It has vermiculite instead of perlite.

For slow germinating stuff, I like topping with the chicken grit. Helps to keep algae down, diffuse compaction from watering and keep blown in seeds/spores at bay. Most Clematis with which I'm familiar seem to like a little lime, so I use the oyster shell grit used for laying hens, rather than the granite. Usually about 8-10 bucks (or should I say "buck buck buck buuuUUCKS") for 50 lbs at Agway. I like the different sized particles.

I've used builders' sand, as well and it's even cheaper, although I find that it tends to solidify into something like pavement on top after while.

Keep us posted! Thanks for reminding me of spring! Judy

Hi Judy,

Thanks! It sounds like I'd better get cracking on these guys. :)

Do you have a recommended medium for them? I'm guessing a standard
50/50 mix is fine, but I've read that some people add grit, others
just top it with grit, and others just let it be.

Have you started growing anything for next year?

Chris
