Hi Barbara,
I grew Biden's 'Golden Eye' that I purchased from Thompson and Morgan
last spring. I didn't keep any notes but as I recall they were quite easy to
germinate following the instruction on the seed package. If you're growing them
under lights, don't start them too early. I started them about 10-12 weeks
before my last frost date and they should have been planted out at least two
weeks before I was able to. They're fast growers. They're also great plants.
I hung them over a lime stone wall and they flowered well into november here in
zone 5.
Your begonias are probably too dry. I've got mine in regular peat
growing medium, which I dampened down a bit before storing them. Try soaking
them in a bowl of water for a couple of hours then let them dry off a bit before
putting them back in storage. This should rehydrate them.
