I have a greenhouse and several bottom-heat mats where I' m starting (too)
many plants from seed. The last few days have been very sunny and the
greenhouse temp goes up to around 80 deg. After I have planted a flat full
of seeds and moistened it well, I put a clear plastic dome over all. I
feel I need to keep the direct sun off of these flats as I know the seeds
will quickly cook. Is a layer or two of newspaper good for keeping sun off
enough to prevent excessive heat build-up ? Would shade cloth be better ?
Some of the seeds need light to germinate. Will these still get enough
light to do the job ?
BTW...Some seeds sown last week needed darkness for germination and I
placed those pots in a cardboard box, closed the lid, and checked them
daily for signs of germination. Today I decided to look at some of these (
vinca in 4" pots) with a magnifying glass. Nothing was visible to my naked
eye, but when looked at with the magnifying glass I found dozens had
produced radicles and will be fully up in no more than 1 more day. I
brought these pots out of the box and they are sitting on growing benches
now. Will today's bright sun be too much for these (almost) seedlings ?
One more question - Should I set the thermostat for the exhaust fan to,
say, 70 degrees to keep the greenhouse interior cooler at this time ?
