Re: New Novice Question About Spuds

Ted,

Make yourself a wire cage about 2 1/2 feet in diameter. Use several
go-rounds of chicken wire or a heavier wire if you can find some. You can
then put a layer of newspaper in the bottom and part way up the sides. Take
some of your soil that you have amended with a composted manure, some sand
for good drainage, add some lime and anything organic that you might have
(i.e. compost). Put a layer in the bottom of your cage, lay in your tubers
and backfill the cage as the potato stems elongate. Be sure to add more
newspaper to hold in the soil. A decent layer should last the entire
season.

To determine if your potatoes are ready, just reach into your cage and feel
around. If it's time to harvest, just remove the cage and harvest will be
easy.

Good luck.
