I tried last year to grow some Stewartia malacodendron from seed, but in
some 30 mature capsules from a friend's plant none contained what was
recognizable as a seed, just black specks. What does the seed look
like? And what critter pollinates the genus? Does it need several
plants for cross pollination?
Has anybody propagated either Stewartia malacodendron or ovata from
seed? I have had some luck with malacodendron hardwood cuttings taken
at bloom time and rooted in long fiber sphagnum or composted pine bark.
If this entry does not fulfill the mailing list rules, I give up. To
discuss propagation you need to get somewhat into seed and plant
sources, legitimate sources, not wild dug or stolen.
