Hey there! How is everyone?

of generic tubes every 6 months, the costs become more comparable. The
problem becomes one of the amount one has to spend at any one time; in
my circumstances, 18 Verilux tubes at once (~$225.00), or approx. $30.00
for 10 ea. warm/cool white, to be repeated in 6 mos....
And I write:
True, regular flourescent tubes should be replaced after every 6
months of continuous use. I don't have any experience with these
Verilux. However, if you want to compare prices, check out ~$225 for 18
Verilux tubes (I'll borrow your figures) once every three years,
compared to $30 for 10 tubes every 6 months. That is $54 for 18 tubes
every six months, and $312 over the course of 3 years, for the same
number of bulbs. Now a 400 watt metal halide light will cost about
$150, and a $20 bulb should be good for a year. Over the course of
three years you've got $150 for the light, and $60 worth of bulbs, for a
total of $110, or a big savings over any of the florescent fixtures. A
1000 watt MH doesn't cost hardly any more than a 400 watt bulb, but of
course it will consume more than twice as much energy (but producing
more than twice as much light too).
So, if cost effectiveness is what you are striving for, high
intensity discharge lights are the only way to go. They do, however,
strike me as a bit of overkill for starting seeds. But then, if you are
using florescents for 6 months or more at a time, then you really aren't
just starting seeds, now are you?
Love and war,
Glider
