Hello List:
I've used both the cool white/warm white combination set-up, and Verilux
'full-spectrum' tubes. My experience has been that I had somewhat improved
growth & development with Verilux. It is true that they are much more
expensive than generic cool white/warm white tubes, but they have an
effective life of approximately three years. After replacing banks of
generic tubes every 6 months, the costs become more comparable. The problem
becomes one of the amount one has to spend at any one time; in my
circumstances, 18 Verilux tubes at once (~$225.00), or approx. $30.00 for 10
ea. warm/cool white, to be repeated in 6 mos.
I can also say that my results with generic tubes have been good enough that
I haven't budgeted for saving up for Verilux replacements.
I agree with the comments from folks who recommend using fans for
ventilation. I keep a small box fan running 24 hours a day year-round in my
small lean-to greenhouse, and keep a similar fan running in my basement
where I have my seed-starting light banks, even though it is a reasonably
open area. In both circumstances I have fewer problems with fungal
infections and certain insect infestations due to the fan use.
