I've used the Phillips Son Agro 430 watt HID for the last 3 years. This is
a high-pressure sodium light, which is generally the most efficient type on
the market (produce more light per unit of power), It is not as
uncomfortably yellow as the typical HPS. (there is a strong absorption band
in the yellow, which I assume is accompanied by emissions that can be seen
scattered elsewhere in the spectrum. This produces a more
spectrally-balanced light source.) Heat has not been a problem; those
plants that required very high light levels to avoid legginess happened to
enjoy the consequent heat levels. I use the 430W lamp on a 4' x 5' table.
Plants that enjoy lower light levels can be positioned around the perimeter
to take advantage of the scattered light, although they require frequent
turning.
The cost of power is a consideration. I would certainly not get a more
powerful bulb than the one I'm now using unless I was confident that the
table would alway be fully utilized.
