Penstemon barbatus germinates best for me if I pot it up (just cover the seed
very sliughtly, it needs light) and put the pot outside (wrapped in plastic
wrap) where it's exposed to the weather but gets no direct sunlight.
Germination will take place in the spring.  I have gotten germination inside
at 70 degrees, but I get healthier seedlings with outdoor treatment
(stratification).

"Not true to type" means that the plants you grow from seeds may be different
from the parent plant...it may just be a color difference or it may be that
the plant is different (usually inferior to the parent plant).

Geum usually germinates in 2-4 weeks (or more) at 65 to 70 degrees planted
about 1/16 in. deep.  It helps germination to reduce the temperature at night,
but mostof us do that in our homes anyway.
