Barb...
Careful, careful with germinating seeds on paper towels. I've been at this
for years and I've tried paper towels and wet cotton...problem is, the
germinating seeds quickly penetrate the towels or cotton and you lose roots
trying to get them off (out). And...you have to transplant into growing
medium as soon as they germinate, so you've just created another step for
yourself. Through the years I have tried to simplify the whole seed-growing
process and personally, I think starting seeds in soilless germinating medium
in pots where they can grow until they have their first true leaves gives me
the best results and the healthiest seedlings.
Kniphofia uvaria germinates in 2-3 weeks at 65-70 degrees (plant 1/4 in.
deep).
I'm not familiar with the Lychnis you mention, but most Lychnis germinates
readily at 70 degrees with light (just sow seed on surface of medium). If you
don't get germination in 2-3 weeks, stick the pot in the refrig. for 2-3 weeks
and then out again to 70 degrees.
Good luck,
