I think I would go ahead & start them and see what happens.
If I was in the mood to try it, it would drive me nuts if I didn't try!
Also, if you prepare a bedding spot for them, they probably will be OK even if
they are small.
I didn't. I just plopped them in around a few existing plants without killing
the grass & making a spot for them.
So I think the grass 'smothered' them.
Good luck with your project.
If these don't make it you can try again in the fall.
