The standard suggestion is to dilute your fine seed [eg, digitalis] in
fine, dry sand. Perhaps one part seed to 10 or 20 of the sand. Sow with
a salt shaker, or as I prefer, by thumb-and-forefinger metering.
In fact, you can also sow one seed at a time, spacing the seed by folding
a 3x5 or 5x7 index card along its midline, cutting the apex to a V. Then
put a tiny pinch of seed on the card, and use a pin or needle to persuade
the seeds to fall. You might seed a 1/4 or 1/8 inch apart in rows, or
perhaps 20 to 30 seeds in a 4-inch pot. You may still need to thin, but
only after the seedlings are well up. [Thinning is probably best done
with scissors to avoid disturbing neighbors..]
The real pitfall with such seed is the urge to USE it all!
