SV: Charate -- please explain

I recently read about charate in the booklets Propagation Secrets for California Native Plants and Seed Propagation of Native California Plants, and charate is stem pieces of the plant Adenostoma fasciculatum , which have been burnt, so it's basically ashes of this plant. It is applied in a small amount ( I guess you sprinkle it over ) over the seeds after they have been sowed, and according to this book it improves germination greatly for certain species, like for example Antirrhinum coulterianum, Chaenactis artemisiaefolia, Cryptantha muricata, Emmenanthe penduliflora and others listed in the book. I have not used this charate, but would very much like to know where I could get some, as Adenostoma fasciculatum doesn't grow around here.
