Re: Introduction

Thought that I would take this time for an introduction as well. I
should begin by saying that Ive been waiting for a list like this to
happen for acouple years so Im very excited to see this taking place,
thanks to the folks on the other end for initiating this project. Im
hoping that info generated here will be archived & maybe a website
devoted to information about germinating difficult & unusual seeds will
come out of this. We certainly have space for such a thing with our
server but I dont personally have the time to do all of it. If it could
be collectively generated that would be exceptional.

My partner & I started a permaculture eco-villge 6 years ago in
southwestern Wisconsin (hard core zone 4, 40 & 50 below withOUT wind
chill are not uncommon here). We have a bunch of buildings, including
an old school. We have started about 2 1/2 acres of demonstration
gardens at the school, mostly hardy perennials that have some use,
fruits, nuts, herbs, psychotropics, natives, hardy succulents. We have
maybe 200 different things growing. The last couple years I have been
trying to grow more of my things from seed, especially nuts, stone
fruit, hardy roses, opuntias, herbs. Far more rewarding then going to
the nursery & picking things off the shelf. We live out in the country
& my access to information about propagation is quite limited & I find
myself constantly trying to find someone to answer my questions.

My main love tho are things that will never grow outside here & I have
an extensive collecting of figs in 5 gallon containers, passionflowers,
citrus, guavas, euphorbias, caudiciform plants including pachypodiums,
acacias, ipomoeas, loquats, papayas, pomegranates. My long range plan
with most of this material is the eventual construction of a large
bioshelter where much of this would be in the ground under glass,
installed with birds, reptiles, & other critters.

I have never taken a botany class in my life, am completely self-taught
& consequently there are glaring gaps in what I know & dont know so I
will be perpetually grateful to others on the list who take the time to
share their knowledges.

I am also quite involved in the seed savers networks. I also am part of
a new seed saver group based on permaculture species of economic uses.
I will try to post a blurb about this catalogue when it is up &
available.
