Subject: rooting Rosa sericea f. pteracantha
If we can collectively figure out how to reliably root this plant it would
be great. At Morris Arboretum we have an individual which was originally
wild-collected and has especially large, magnicent thorns.
So far:
successes: Cuttings taken 5-17-91, placed in mist
        0.1% IBA talc, 15 cuttings, 2 rooted
        1,000 ppm K-IBA in water, 15 cutting, 6 rooted
        failures: Cuttings taken 7-24-91
        Woods 1:9 water
        0.1% IBA talc
        Cuttings taken 6-18-90
        5,000 ppm K-IBA
Some strategies to consider in future:
Take cuttings when really soft. I might try two weeks earlier.
I am now using IBA in propylene glycol. I haven't tried that yet.
Use prop media of 70% perlite: 30% peat for good drainage.
Since then I have new mist nozzles, which are very fine droplets.

In the case of varieties you consider:

1) the 5,000 ppm K-IBA at any time is extremely toxic to tender cuttings.

2)July 24th might be too late

Do consider:

1) take cuttings from the lower portion of the plant. This cuttings will be
juvenile. Cuttings taken from the upper part of the plant are older even
though the stem and leaf are new and tender.

2) in our process we like to take cuttings at 4-6 leaf. if you take cuttings
too early they will not be hardened enough ... therefore your June cuttings
will be more suitable.

3) we prefer to use a total immerse method. This method will stimulate the
root initiation by causing the plant to promote its own auxin generation.
-take the cuttings and totally immerse them in a solution containing water
soluble IBA (like Rhizopon AA Water Soluble Tablets @2-4 tablets per liter
water) for a few seconds, then plant. Under mist is very suitable since the
leaves will not dehydrate. You might also try plant...totally water...cover
with plactic with the edges of the tray or pot completely sealed...keep
temperature at 65-80F (too hot will promote fungus)...keep in light.

4) altermate auxin try dry powder @ 0.3% IBA such as Rhizopon AA #2

Rhizopon is available from your local hort supply. Ask them to orde from
