Hi Colette,
There are a number of different species that go to make up the various
hybrid crocosmias and those species vary markedly. They vary from yellow to
red, in height from 30 to 100 cms, some like dry and others wet conditions.
Memory tells me that the two you cite vary quite considerably and probably
have a different 'set' of parents. I can probably check them out, but it
might take some time.
However there is an additional problem in that, as you may know, Crocosmias
are frequently wrongly named. I grow over 50 different ones here and I have
often received three different plants under the same name. Judging by the
results, this arises just as much from nurseries growing on from seed then
selling under the original name, as it does from names getting swapped around.
As you may gather from the above, they are easy from seed - just pot them up
and give them a little, gentle bottom heat or even leave them for the spring
to do its work. Then I would grow them on in a container for a year or two.
Like many of the South African Irids, you can often grow them through their
first winter with some judicious feeding and watering, giving you a stronger
bulb more quickly.
Best regards
David Victor
