Hate to disagree, Ellen, but I've not found a cold period necessary for
germination of A. triphyllum.

While I seldom grow this species from seed, since it is all over the
place
around here, on at least three occasions in the past two years I've had
very
fast germination at room temperature of different forms of the species
(including Craig Stubbs' "tall form").

I soak the seed in water for longer than you do (about a week). I think
it
may take this long to get rid of whatever inhibits germination, and that
may
make the difference that you've noted. Otherwise, the inhibitor will
probably
gradually disappear during the cold period, that would normally occur
outdoors.

The only Arisaema species that I have found to need a cold period is A.
thunbergii ssp. urashima, which may even need two cold periods before
appearing (it probably sprouts a root after the first one). Eric Walton
has
told me that he was told the same thing in Japan.

Incidentally, thanks for the idea of putting a plastic tent over a
basement
light stand. I was just trying to figure out this morning how to get
more
heat to the pots down there!
