Data on Liatris spicata in the manual by Norman Deno: Dry seed
germination starts within 7 days at 70 F [21 C], and continues for several
weeks. There don't appear to be any special conditions of light,
temperature, or other dormancy-braking requirements in this species, at
least. Seed also germinates at lower temperatures, but takes much longer,
about three months at 40 F [6 C].
I would surface sow in flats, first picking out chaff and "blind" seed,
covering the seed with grit.
I have no data on other species at hand, but the above gemination behavior
is pretty typical of grassland composites from continental areas of the
US, so I'd expect others to be similar.
